BBC radio and audiences

L/O: to explore the BBC Radio contextual issues and the audience behind the Live Lounge.

.Entertain young listeners

.15-29 year olds

.artist emerging

.live music

.young adults

The use of bright colours shows that the show could be fun and entertaining on the show. The presenters
are in similar cloths witch could represent that the presenters get along and have fun with each other witch could make the show more enjoyable. The constant use of the number one shows that it is important and has a benefit on the show. The use of a circle could be seen as a better shape to use because most of the other shapes are either rectangles or squares so they might have used a circle to make it stand out.

remit evidence:

These would appeal to 15-29 year olds because they are popular or new music artists.

Political context

Funded by TV licence (BBC argument)
  • Reflect diversity by and cater for all.
  • 15-29 younger audience no-one else does that.
  • Live music on live lounge
Not funded (political decision makers)
  • Mainstream music doesn't educate or inform.

Convergence task
Media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitation and computer networking.

The advantages are that it is accessible from other platforms instead of just radios. The BBC would have a advantage of this because they would have more views on there network which could make it more popular so that the radio gets around more. The advantage for vevo is it gets more view as the BBC gets rid of there songs after a mouths.

Live lounge appeal and format

L/O: To explore the format of the show and its appeals.

The benefits of broadcasting on two channels are that there is an audience increase.

These presenters are used because they are young and funny and have different backgrounds. They are host currently on live lounge.they also did the breakfast show for kiss for 10 years

the live lounge is also the name of a room in the Radio 1 studios.Artist are filmed in an intimate radio studio acoustically which means they have no background track to help.Often they do a little production rehearsal.
Uses and Gratifications
Personal identity
Information
Entertainment
Social interaction

Personal identity-relate to the presenters who are similar age  and interested in music.
information-background information about the artist and upcoming events.
Entertainment-enjoy the live music.
social interaction-people can discuss it.

Convergenes:
.you can access BBC iplayer, news, bitesize and sport
.the artist mentioned are lots of different as there are multipul artists on live lounge.
.other live lounge shows pervious or upcoming.

Live performance is regarded as more culturally significant than simply playing records. Its is also more expensive.

Stormzy live lounge
3 day preparation,6 professional singers, musical director and more these all get payed loads and they need lots os space to do it for all the equipment. This makes it very expensive.

The Live Lounge appeals to the audience through the presenters on the show who understand and enjoy what the audience does.An example of this is seen by the language the use such as bro and big up they use terms like this as is is slang the audience would use. This ensures that the Live Lounge targets the audience range from 15-29 years olds because it relates to them through the presenters and language used. The Live Lounge fits to the BBC remit through young artists like Ed Sheran who most people know so it will bring in an audience.

L/O:to understand exam style questions and practice exam techniques.

The Live Lounge appeals to the audience through the music because they generally play music that is popular to the target audience so the enjoy there experience. An example seen is when they played the songs such as miss you by Oliver tree and snap out of it by artic monkeys.

Support emerging artists:
They have done this by inviting new artists to the show. This can be seen with holly humberstone who dream to play live lounge.

offers a range of new music:
They have done this by playing a mix of new and mainstream artists on the show. This can be seen when Stormy was on the show who is mainstream but not as commercial genre but has played with Beyonce.

Q1)
a)horizontal integration
b)congerance
c)remit

Q2)
a)The radio 1 live lounge target there audiences through there presenters.an example of this is the slang they use such as bro and big up which is typically the language the audience would use to there friends to communicate. This  could be to attract to the audience and combine to them as there the same.

b)The BBC Radio one Live lounge benefits the public by that is online so they can pause rewind if they need to go or missed parts and after they paused or rewind they can refresh the page to get back up to date to the radio.

c)One way the audience can be passive is that they can sit there and listen so they dont engage with events such as text and phone ins to win competitions. Also they can be active where they do engage with the radio such as doing text and phone ins to have a chance to win diffrent things for competitions and excitement.

Q3)
The BBC radio has to provide a wider range of content than commercial radio because of there remit so that they can stay open. This can be seen on the BBC Radio one Live Lounge as there is a verity of music throughout the show so it can reach a wider range of content so that diffrent people come in increasing the range of things that happen on the show witch then increases the content.

They do this by allowing this to go to multipul devices such as phones laptops and tablets. This provides a wider range of content because on the more devices its on makes it more viewed as it is promoted more and the diffrent types of people listening expands the type of music listened to so the amount of content is increased as diffrent people like diffrent things.

Q3)
Make points about how the BBC Radio provide wider content on their radio stations, give examples on Radio 1 and why they have to do this linked to the remit.

what content is more than commercial radio?             remit                       example from study

they dont have to attract a wide audience on       target 15-29 years old     it fits the remit
r1

BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several reasons.Firstly radio 1provides a  small target audience 15-29 year olds. This example is due to the remit and in particular the target audience who could be in school that can help them. We can identify this in the live lounge through the up and coming artists and how they were with music.

Teenage Dirtbag
2000
Wheatus
Genre:Skater rock
uk release:June 20, 2000
song is about:
what happens in video:
who's featured:
lyrics:                                                     Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her
She rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
Oh, how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me

'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Her boyfriend's a dick
And he brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And he drives an IROC
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me

'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'

Man, I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely
Lo and behold
She's walkin' over to me
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don't say maybe
I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you

Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'...

the purpose of sk8ter boi is the song is actually a story that "I" (Avril Lavigne) is telling. It is about a skater boy (punk who liked a pretty girl who did ballet, so she was very different from him) though she liked him too. But since her friends didn't like him she turned him down. Five years later, she is a single mother. It helps to promote thr music and her identity and her image in the music video by what she is wearing. Also by smashing the guitar on a car it shows she's a rockstar and ruthless. This promotes her.It helps conveys the music

the purpose of teenage dirtbag was the trend was previously used for people to show their past fashion faux-pas, but now it's all about people exposing pictures of the slightly embarrassing yet nostalgic teenage versions of themselves. From Victoria Beckham to Paris Hilton - all the celebrities are jumping on the trend. The music video introduces the band to us so there identity and status is identified.

Narrative teenage dirtbag:
The narrative of this music video is the loser of the school falls on the stairs going unconscious and he is in his school and has a crush on a girl who doesn't think she notices him. Then he was at the prom he's crush came over to him and asked him to go to watch iron maiden live and they go dance. After he wakes up and realises it was all a dream.

Narrative sk8ter boi:
The narrative of this music video is the band setting up a illegal gig in the middle of the street and the police turn up and start arresting people. Also, the skater boy was filming a girl at the start of the video and as the video went on he got way more interested in Avril Lavigne and the girl at the begging gets arrested.

Mise-en-scene

L/O:to examine the use of media language in music videos.

this promotes her wealth as she is in a bath fall of money and expensive jewellery.she also doesn't care about her money as some is on the floor. she's also luxury this can be seen with the golden tap and how she looks.

mise-en-scene sk8ter boi:

the setting on the street in the city with her playing a illegal gig could represent she doesn't care about consequences and this can be seen as she's is standing on a car.

she is in a typical skater outfit which suggests that she is a rebel.they could put here in the center with noone else there as she id the main person and you need to focas on her.she can be seen as a rebel with the studs and how she breaks the guitars and the car window.

mise-en-scene teenage dirtbag:

the cloths they are wearing could say they are trying to blend in with there souring people around them as one of them are wearing a bucket hat and normal tee-shirts.

the setting of the school could suggest they feel young as they have gone to school for themselves and the narrative of the music video.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 1st March 2023

L/O: to examine the use of media language in music videos.

Donow:

1) the setting: its set in a small town not many people know because most of the time treasure is found like gold which is seen with the fish that is gold.
2) the lighting: its dark or dull most of the time which simulates something bad could happen.
3) the props : had an effect on it,this is seen with the props with the fishing nets to show its set in 1870s as they used them with hand and not machines like now.

st8ter boi:
1)costumes
2)props

Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like skaters .This is achieved by using costume, hair, and makeup. This could suggest to the audience that she is rebellious and unsterotypical because girls in music videos dont normally dress like that.

In Avril Lavignes music video, it is set in the city.We know this because we are shown shots of her singing in the middle of the street and her and the cast in building like run down ones and coffee shops.
In my opinion the video is set here because most of the time you see skaters in the city also because for the illegal performance in the street there would be more people.

Teenage dirtbag (the loser):
.the costume he wears in the music video is stereotypical for a loser and nerd with the trapper hat and the jacket he wears.
.this tells us that he is unpopular and most likely out of place compared to others.
.

The music videos for teenage dirtbag by wheatus and Avril lavignes sk8ter boi use setting and costume
to achieve similar effects. This can be seen when Avril Lavigne sets her music video in a american city which can be referenced with the yellow taxis, this links with Teenage dirtbag because in the video there is a character dressed as a typical americain jock this is seen with the letterman jacket he wears.these are used similarly because in both videos we see rebellious and punk behaviour with how Avril Lavigne acts and dresses and how the jock acts like a bully to the loser which can be seen as rebellious and punk like behaviour.

Camerawork

S= shot type
A=angle
m=movement

dutch tilt:The Dutch Angle Shot, also known as the Dutch Tilt, German Angle, canted angle, canted camera, or oblique angle, is a technique that consists of an angled camera shot where the horizon line isn't parallel with the bottom of the frame, and vertical lines are at an angle to the side of the frame.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 8th March 2023

L/O: To explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos.

1) the shot type used is a long shot with a low dutch angle.
2) it is used to make it seem more fun and childish.this could mean the singer is singing about her childhood or how it is being with friends and how fun it is.
3) this relates to mise-en-scene because the costumes they are in make them look like children also the singer is the only one wearing red which matches the toy car and she is in the center so it cold mean she is the one in charge.

1) the connotations of the setting could be being lonely as if she was in a city she would be surrounded and where this taken it is lonely and bleek.
2)The artist could be singing about being lonely as she is alone.
3)this links to camera shot with a long/wide shot.

teenage dirtbag- Naturalistic
sk8ter boi- Expressionistic

2) shot name: POV shot.
why used : to show the prospective of a viewer who is close to her and that she is the main focus.
why used here:it is used here to show that the guy has changed to the star person / singer.

3) shot name: long shot.
why used: to show that he is lonely and isolated.
why used here: it is used here to show the background that he is a loser on the sign.

4) shot name: long shot with a high angle
why used:it is used to show so is the center of attention and main person in it and the audience around here.
why used here: it is used here to show everyone is focused on here.

5) shot name: mid shot low angle.
why used: it is used to make him look bigger and stronger also that he is popular.
Why used here: it is used here to make him look like he is in charge.

6) shot name: extreme close up and dutch angle.
why used: it is used to show that she is in control of the situation.
why used here: it is used here to show that she is important.

i think the reason they use lots of diffrent shots and angles is to the fast pace, the audience and how Avril Lavigne is the main person.

Sk8ter boi:
1)chaotic
2)fast
3)thrilling
4)energetic

Teenage dirtbag:
1)smooth
2)clam
3)natural
4)chilled

The camera movement in Sk8ter boi is expressionistic. For example at one point in the video Avril Lavigne and the audience start jumping around. The energetic camera work fits the tone of the song because we are shown a high angle which lets us see this.

The camera movement in Teenage Dirtbag is naturalistic. For example at one point in the video the jock is walking in the hallways. The smooth camerawork fits the tone of the song because we don't see any big movements in the camera.

In sk8ter boi the music video producers use camerawork to help construct the identity of the artist Avril Lavigne acting energetic and chaotic.this can be seen at one point in the video where her and the audience is shown jumping around the street whilst she is singing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 22nd March 2023

L/O: to explore how sound and editing  are used to create meaning in music videos.

the two sound categories are diegetic and non-diegetic sound.the difference is diegetic is what the audience and actors can hear and non-diegetic is when only the audience can hear but not the actors.

teenage dirtbag:
only diegetic sound is the car hitting the bike and the bike falling over this is to connect the narrative to the song.

skater boi:
.spay cans
.rope
.cars/traffic
.police
.helicopters
.smashing of glass
these add realism and helps set the seen of the city.
it is very anti-establishment.

Editing:

.special effects
.transitions
.order of shots
.continuity
.shot duration
.pace and rhythm

teenage dirtbag is edited to the beat but is slow so it still shows the narrative so longer shots.

skater boi is edited to the beat of the song more cuts.

both of the videos use continuity editing.

in teenage dirtbag and skater boi the camera work is used differently this is used with naturalistic and expressionistic camera work. This is seen in  teenage dirt bag with an naturalistic camera work as it is  slower paced and has slower movement to help show the narrative of the video this is seen when the boy is on the stairs as they used multipul shot types to show him going down the stairs. Also it is seen in skater boi which has a expressionistic camera work as it is faster paced and has faster movement this is because skater boi doesn't have as much as a narrative, this is seen when Avril Lavigne is jumping.

Wednesday 26th April 2023

L/O: To explore and practice exam style questions.

MEDIA LANGUAGE EXAMPLE Q:
WWW:good use of terminology and you explain the effect.
EBI: make sure you are using full sentences and accurate grammar.

 4 mark question:

Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos.
Refer two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

In Avril Lavigne's Sk8ter boi gender is represented anti stereotypical. This can be seen with the media language mise-un-scene as she is dressed like a tom boy. This can be seen thought out the video where she is wearing un revealing cloth with is normally seen in female artists she subverts that by wearing jeans and a normal shirt. This suggest that she is independent and strong. Whereas in wheatus's teenage dirtbag the female characters are seen as stereotypical.

10 mark question:

Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos.
Refer two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Stereotypes are used in music videos because they are easily recognisable and so help the audience understand the narrative. For example,in Sk8ter boi, they use stereotypical representation of males as active, rule breakers and interested in girls. This is shown through them often skating, biking or driving, often in places they shouldn't be (like on the roof-tops), and filming the pretty girl in the car. This fits in with the teenage stereotypes also used. The stereotypes of teenagers are represented as rebellious and law breaking in sk8ter boi. This can be seen at the start of the video when there are teenagers spray painting on the sides of a building and later on in the middle of the street. It also show law breaking by having them do a street performance which is illegal. This suggests that they don't care about what they do.This can be seen in Teenage Dirtbag when they use the Stereotype representation of High school as a place that is separated into groups as in the music video you can see the popular jock bullying the loser which is stereotypical in a American high school. A second, stereotype in Teenage dirtbag is the way people are dressed which is seen as the popular jock is wearing a letterman jacket.
